Sand Baths for Hamsters: Sand, Not Dust
A sand bath is how many small rodents keep their coats in condition. The material you put in it matters more than the bowl.
Sand rather than dust
Very fine dust stays airborne and can irritate small airways. Coarser sand intended for the purpose does the cleaning job without hanging in the air.
Bowl depth
Deep enough that the animal can roll rather than skate across the top, and heavy or fixed enough that it does not tip. A shallow dish gets used as a toilet instead.
Placement
Away from the water bottle and the food. Wet sand clumps and stops working, and it is unpleasant to bathe in.
Maintenance
Sift out droppings regularly and replace the sand when it stops running freely. A neglected sand bath is worse than none.
