Playpen Time Outside the Cage

Floor time in a pen is enrichment and exercise, provided the pen is genuinely secure.

Height and gaps

Small animals climb and squeeze better than expected. Check panel height against the species and make sure the joins have no gaps at the base.

The floor matters

A washable mat under the pen protects the floor and gives grip. Bare laminate is slippery and hard on small feet.

Furnish it

An empty pen is an exposed space. A hide, a tunnel and something to chew turn it into somewhere the animal will actually explore.

Supervise

Pen time is not unattended time, particularly where there are other pets in the house or cables within reach.
